Questions & Answers
Why study music theory?
Music theory is, in a way, the “grammar” of music. It helps the student decode all the symbols that make up a musical score (the staff, clefs, note values, rhythms, etc.). As learning progresses, the student will acquire more advanced theoretical concepts that will allow them to analyze a musical piece, thereby supporting and enriching their interpretation.
Why study solfège?
To “solfège” a score means to sing it while naming the notes. Solfège helps the student improve sight-reading skills while developing musical ear training and vocal accuracy. These new skills enable a student to achieve a better interpretation of their musical scores (harmonic and melodic sense, pitch accuracy, etc.). Solfège requires regular practice, which is why it is important to begin early in one’s musical training.
Why study music dictation?
You probably know someone who can play every melody they hear on their instrument—without reading a music score! We say - with admiration - that this person has a great musical ear! A student can develop this ability through music dictation. By listening to and identifying series of notes and intervals that form musical phrases and noting them on a music staff, a student can train their musical ear.
In doing so, they develop relative pitch and musical memory.
The earlier this training begins, the more easily these skills are acquired.
Why study rhythm?
Often a favorite subject among students, rhythm consists of recognizing and assimilating—through various exercises—the different rhythms and rhythmic patterns found in musical repertoire. A solid sense of rhythm ensures a strong and well-structured interpretation.
